Chapter 01

The story

Xiaomi was founded in Beijing on April 6, 2010, by Lei Jun and six other associates. Lei Jun, a seasoned executive from Kingsoft and a co-founder of Joyo.com (which was later sold to Amazon), harbored dissatisfaction with the existing mobile phone market. He believed he could create a superior product, which motivated the inception of Xiaomi with a focus on innovative consumer electronics.

The company's journey began with the release of its Android-based firmware, MIUI, in August 2010, and quickly followed with its first smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi 1, in August 2011. This initial product successfully combined Xiaomi's custom MIUI software with an Android installation. Xiaomi initially focused on online sales to keep costs low and prices competitive, a strategy that quickly gained traction, propelling them to become the largest smartphone seller in China by 2014.

From these early breakthroughs, Xiaomi rapidly expanded its product portfolio beyond smartphones to include a wide array of consumer electronics by 2015. This diversification, coupled with its innovative sales model and commitment to affordable high-quality products, solidified its position as a significant player in the global technology market, even being dubbed the "Apple of China."

Chapter 02

Challenges along the way

A significant challenge for Xiaomi has been maintaining its razor-thin margins by keeping product prices close to manufacturing costs, often relying on inventory optimization and flash sales to manage stock efficiently. This strategy, while enabling affordability, requires precise execution and tight control over supply chains. Additionally, expanding rapidly into international markets has presented hurdles, as seen when the company exited the Brazilian market in 2016 after an initial push. The company also faces intense competition and the constant need for innovation to stay ahead in the fast-paced consumer electronics industry, as evidenced by its commitment to significant R&D investments to compete with established giants like Apple in the high-end smartphone segment.
