Chapter 01

The story

Unitree Robotics was founded by Wang Xingxing in May 2016, stemming from his postgraduate research at Shanghai University where he developed quadruped robots. His early work included the XDog, created for his master's thesis in 2016. This robotic dog gained significant online attention, drawing interest from both buyers and investors.

Inspired by this recognition, and after a stint at DJI, Wang Xingxing decided to pursue his vision independently, establishing Unitree in a modest 50-square-meter office in Hangzhou. The company initially focused on specialized quadruped robots designed for the consumer market, a niche that quickly garnered traction.

Unitree's breakthrough moment came with the release of the Go1 in 2021, a sophisticated quadruped robot that demonstrated the company's capabilities. This success laid the groundwork for their expansion into humanoid robotics in 2024, signaling a significant evolution in their product offerings and market ambition.

Chapter 02

Challenges along the way

Unitree Robotics has navigated significant challenges, particularly surrounding the controversial usage of its products by military entities. The company has faced allegations and scrutiny concerning its quadruped robots being used by armed forces, including the Russian Armed Forces and during Chinese joint military drills, prompting Unitree to publicly deny selling to the People's Liberation Army. Furthermore, the company has dealt with security concerns, including allegations of backdoors in their products allowing remote access, which Unitree claimed was a vulnerability that has since been fixed. More recently, in 2025, security researchers reported potential data collection issues and wormable vulnerabilities in their humanoid robots, posing ongoing security and privacy challenges.
