The story
Skydio was founded in 2014 by Adam Bry, Abe Bachrach, and Matt Donahoe, all alumni of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Bry and Bachrach's research at MIT's Robust Robotics Group focused on creating aircraft capable of autonomous flight without GPS, culminating in a fixed-wing drone that navigated a parking lot using a laser range finder.
After graduating in 2012, Bry and Bachrach honed their skills at Google's Project Wing, an autonomous drone initiative. Recognizing the vast potential for autonomous drones across various industries, they partnered with Donahoe to launch Skydio, driven by a belief in the transformative power of self-flying technology. Their initial efforts were supported by early investors like venture capitalist Andreessen Horowitz.
The company's first major product was the Skydio R1 in 2018, featuring advanced subject-follow mode and obstacle avoidance through multiple cameras. Skydio quickly established itself as a leader in autonomous drone technology, achieving unicorn status in March 2021 as the first US drone manufacturer to exceed $1 billion in value.
Challenges along the way
Skydio has faced significant technical and market challenges, including criticisms regarding their drones' advertised flight distances and payload capacities compared to competitors like DJI. While initially targeting the consumer market, they struggled to gain significant market share, leading to their exit from the consumer sector in 2023. The company has also contended with geopolitical issues, including sanctions from China after its products were approved for use by fire departments in Taiwan. Furthermore, a highly publicized configuration error in 2026 unintentionally exposed live San Francisco Police Department drone feeds online for several months, raising concerns about data security and privacy.
