OpenAI was founded in December 2015 as a nonprofit organization with a forward-thinking vision to ensure artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity. Driven by concerns about AI safety and the potential existential risks, co-founders Elon Musk and Sam Altman, along with a team of prominent AI researchers, sought to establish a leading research institution that would prioritize beneficial outcomes over self-interest. They firmly believed that AI should be an extension of individual human wills, broadly and evenly distributed.

The early days saw the company operating from Greg Brockman's living room, later moving to the Pioneer Building in San Francisco. Despite not offering salaries or stock options comparable to industry giants like Facebook or Google, their compelling mission attracted top talent. Many researchers, including co-founder Wojciech Zaremba, turned down lucrative offers to join OpenAI, drawn by the strong group of people and the company's ambitious goals.

OpenAI's early breakthroughs included the release of "OpenAI Gym" in April 2016, a platform for reinforcement learning research. Later that year, they launched "Universe," a software platform designed to measure and train AI's general intelligence across a wide array of applications. A significant boost came in August 2016 when Nvidia gifted its first DGX-1 supercomputer, dramatically reducing AI model training times from days to hours, accelerating the company's research capabilities.
