The story
Logitech was founded in Apples, Vaud, Switzerland, in 1981 by Daniel Borel, Pierluigi Zappacosta, and Giacomo Marini. Borel and Zappacosta, who met while studying electrical engineering at Stanford University in California, returned to Europe and brought in Marini to co-found the company. Initially, the founders focused on developing word processing software for a large Swiss company. However, when that project was cancelled, they pivoted.
Their focus shifted to the computer mouse, an essential component for the nascent graphical user interfaces. Their first mouse, the P4 model, was produced in Switzerland in 1982, based on a design by Swiss inventor Jean-Daniel Nicoud. This early product was crucial in establishing Logitech's direction and its role in the emerging personal computing industry. The company quickly expanded, securing an OEM contract with Hewlett-Packard in 1984, which required them to open a factory in Fremont, California, for production for HP.
A significant early breakthrough came in 1984 with the creation of the first wireless mouse, though widespread adoption for wireless mice didn't happen until Logitech introduced a radio frequency-based version in 1991. The company also introduced its first retail wired mouse, the C7, in 1985, which incorporated an innovative microprocessor circuitry by René Sommer, further enhancing its functionality.
Challenges along the way
Logitech faced challenges in its manufacturing strategy, reorganizing production facilities several times. Initially producing mice in Switzerland, they later expanded to Ireland, Taiwan, and California, only to shut down their Fremont operations in 1994, shifting major production to Suzhou, China. Another notable challenge involved regulatory scrutiny, as in April 2016, the company agreed to pay a $7.5 million penalty following allegations by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission concerning improper inflation of financial results in 2011 and other accounting violations that inaccurately represented its financial health to investors.
