Chapter 01

The story

Illumina, an American biotechnology company, was founded in April 1998 by a team dedicated to advancing genetic analysis. Larry Bock and John Stuelpnagel, while working with venture-capital firm CW Group, discovered the innovative BeadArray technology at Tufts University and secured an exclusive license to it. This foundational technology became central to Illumina's initial offerings.

The company wasted no time bringing its innovations to market, completing its initial public offering in July 2000. Early products included single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping services in 2001, followed by the launch of their first system, the Illumina BeadLab, in 2002. This system utilized GoldenGate Genotyping technology, establishing Illumina as a key player in genetic analysis.

A significant breakthrough came with the 2007 acquisition of Solexa, Inc., a British company that had developed revolutionary genome-sequencing technology. This acquisition, which included Pascal Mayer and Laurent Farinelli's DNA colony sequencing technology, dramatically expanded Illumina's capabilities and cemented its position as a global leader in high-throughput sequencing, powering genetic research across academic, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology sectors worldwide.

Challenges along the way

Illumina has faced significant challenges, particularly in the realm of mergers and acquisitions and intellectual property. The company navigated a hostile takeover bid from Hoffmann-La Roche in 2012, which it successfully rejected. More recently, its acquisition of Grail, a company it had spun off, led to prolonged antitrust disputes with both the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the European Commission, resulting in large fines and ultimately the forced divestiture of Grail. Additionally, Illumina has been involved in several patent infringement lawsuits, including a notable case with BGI where Illumina was ordered to pay $333 million for infringing on BGI's patents, highlighting the intense competitive and legal landscape of the biotechnology industry.
