Chapter 01

The story

Ecovacs Robotics was founded in 1998 by Qian Dongqi, initially operating as TEK Electrical Company, an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for vacuum cleaners. This early stage focused on producing components for other brands, laying the groundwork for their future in household appliances.

A pivotal shift occurred in late 2006 when the company rebranded and transitioned into an independent manufacturer, focusing on robotic devices for home cleaning. This strategic move led to the introduction of their groundbreaking Deebot series of floor cleaning robots by 2007, marking Ecovacs' entry into the burgeoning field of smart home automation and establishing their core product line.

Their commitment to innovation and market expansion was evident from 2012 to 2014, as Ecovacs Robotics established international offices in the United States, Germany, and Japan. Beyond floor cleaning, they diversified their product portfolio to include robots for mobile entertainment, security, air purification, and window cleaning, demonstrating a broad vision for in-home robotics and securing their position as a significant player in the global market.

Chapter 02

Challenges along the way

Ecovacs Robotics faced a significant challenge regarding product security and user privacy, highlighted at the 2024 DEF CON security conference. Researchers presented documentation revealing major vulnerabilities in Ecovac products, including the ability to remotely record users through unsecured Bluetooth connections. A notable aspect of this challenge was Ecovac's initial response, as they did not acknowledge the report prior to publication and later stated they would not issue software fixes for the identified vulnerabilities, raising concerns about their commitment to addressing critical security flaws.
