The story
Frank Wang, a college student at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, founded DJI in 2006. Initially, he built prototypes in his dorm room, selling flight control components to universities and Chinese electric companies. The proceeds enabled him to establish a small staff in Shenzhen.
DJI's early focus was on components for drone hobbyists, and a significant breakthrough came in 2009 when their components facilitated a drone's successful flight around Mt. Everest. The company's expansion into mass-market sales began with the founding of DJI North America in 2011, though this relationship was short-lived.
The real turning point arrived in 2013 with the release of the DJI Phantom. Priced at $629, this user-friendly, fully assembled drone made aerial photography and videography accessible to a wider audience, quickly dominating the consumer drone market and establishing DJI as a leader in the industry.
Challenges along the way
DJI faced significant internal challenges in its formative years, characterized by high employee turnover due to Frank Wang's demanding and perfectionist leadership style. Externally, the company experienced a legal dispute with Colin Guinn, who co-founded DJI North America, highlighting early partnership struggles. More recently, DJI has grappled with privacy and security concerns, leading to its designation as a "Chinese Military Company" and sanctions by the United States government. The company has also encountered patent infringement lawsuits, notably a federal court order in 2023 to pay $279 million in damages to Textron for violating its patent on aircraft flight control systems.
