Chapter 01

The story

Michael Dell founded Dell Computer Corporation, initially known as PC's Limited, in 1984 while still a student at the University of Texas at Austin. Operating from his dormitory room, Dell's vision was to sell IBM PC-compatible computers built from standard components directly to customers. He believed this direct sales model would allow for a better understanding of customer needs and the provision of more effective computing services.

PC's Limited launched its first computer, the "Turbo PC," in 1985, priced at US$795. The company distinguished itself by marketing these systems through national computer magazines, offering competitive prices and custom-assembled units directly to consumers. This approach led to significant success, grossing over $73 million in its first year of operation. Dell subsequently dropped the PC's Limited name in 1987 to become Dell Computer Corporation, reflecting its expansion into the business market and global ambitions.

The company rapidly expanded, setting up its first international operations in Britain and 11 more countries within four years. In 1988, Dell Computer went public on NASDAQ. By 1989, Dell launched its first laptop, the Dell 316LT, marking its entry into new product categories. This foundation of direct sales and efficient customization fueled Dell's rapid growth throughout the 1990s.

Chapter 02

Challenges along the way

Dell faced significant challenges in the mid-2000s, primarily due to a maturing PC market. As price advantages tied to its ultra-lean desktop PC manufacturing diminished, competitors like Hewlett-Packard and Acer became more efficient. The company's heavy reliance on the U.S. corporate PC market also suffered when companies paused upgrade cycles. Furthermore, Dell's direct sales model became a disadvantage as consumers increasingly preferred retail stores to try out devices, hindering its foray into consumer electronics. Internal issues, including slowing sales growth and a perception of lacking innovation compared to rivals, contributed to a decline in stock value and ultimately led to Michael Dell reassuming the CEO role in 2007 amidst an SEC investigation into financial reporting irregularities.
