Bose

Bose Corporation was founded in 1964 by Amar Bose, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor. His journey into audio technology began in 1956, fueled by his disappointment with the performance of a newly purchased audio system. This experience spurred him to develop speaker systems that could better replicate the natural sound of a concert hall by utilizing multiple speakers to reflect sound off surrounding walls.

The company's initial product, the Bose 2201, launched in 1966 after a decade of research. This innovative, yet commercially unsuccessful, speaker system featured 22 speakers, many facing away from the listener to enhance sound reflection. Its failure led Bose to conclude that traditional audio measurement techniques were insufficient, emphasizing the importance of a listener's perception of sound quality.

This insight paved the way for the commercially successful Bose 901 stereo speaker system in 1968. The 901 diverged from conventional designs by directing eight mid-range drivers towards the wall behind the speaker and only one towards the listener, creating a dominance of reflected sound. The 901's immediate success propelled Bose's rapid growth through the 1970s, establishing it as a significant player in the audio equipment industry.
